Dark on Xylaria?
Marja Pennanen,

I found some dark ascos on propably Xylaria filiformis for some time ago.
Now I finaly had some time to study them.
They are about 0,5 mm wide.
Brown spores are about 13-18x5-6 and asci about 90-120x5-7. The apices seem to have a canal, which comes blue in Lugol.
As you may guess I lack experience to be able to determine this finding.
Maybe some of you can help.
Once again confused: Marja

Re : Dark on Xylaria?
Hi Marjae,
this looks very much like X. filiformis as it occurs in northern Europe. Did you collect it on herbaceous stems or dead leaves?
I would be interested in studying this material because the status of this species is fairly unclear and most of collections represent immature anamorphic stromata. Yours is fertile, please send me all what you have in such good condition.

Re : Dark on Xylaria?
Ooh yes,
little do I know. I've learned to know this colourful Xylaria filiformis and now learn, that it is an anamorph. Finally I know at least that :D
I collected these on some herbaceous stems and only noticed these because some carried white mould.
Do you really need all my material (about 10)? I'd like to keep some for the local university and a tiny bit for myself...
Thank you for your interest: Marja

Re : Dark on Xylaria?
Thanks Marja,
just send what you don't need but please keep the white anamorphic ones and try to incubate them indoors in a plastic box with moistened paper. I don't know if it will work but it might be worthwhile.
Best wishes,
Jacques
