Diaporthales on Buddleja sp
Björn Wergen, 24-03-2011 21:37
Björn WergenHello,

today I have found a Diaporthales (I think it is a Diaporthales) on Buddleja sp., a Scrophulariaceae. I think it has similarities with Diaporthe inaequalis, but macroscopical features and smaller spores are clear differences. I will describe it:

Fruitbody a single perithecia embedded into cortex, dark brown to black, 0,1-0,2 mm, with a "hidden" ostiolus, perithecia can only be found after cutting the cortex nearly randomly,
Spores 16-24x5-6 µm, very variable in form, with one septation in the middle and slightly constricted, with roundish or pointed endings, with 1-2 bigger and many small vacuoles, smooth, hyaline.
Asci 80-110x5-7 µm, with 8 spores, uniseriate, it seems as if the tops crack by maturation. Paraphyses not seen.

On hanging, but dead twigs of Buddleja sp.

Has anyone an idea? Can Diaporthales be the right direction?

regards and thanks,
Kazuya

Hi Kazuya,
I have no clue about your fungus but cylindrical asci with uniseriate spores do not fit well Diaporthales. I suggest you focus more closely on asci, wall structure, apical ring, stipe length and paraphyses morphology. It may help find a better direction.
Cheers,
Jacques

Hi Jacques,

thank you for help, I will take some more photos tomorrow, hopefully with asci and paraphyses.
