Podospora/Schizothecium on hare dung
M. M. Gotink, 01-04-2010 20:30
Good evening,
I found this Podospora/Schizothecium on hare dung, a few days ago.
Fruiting bodies 400-550 x 250-300 µm, blackish-brown to black, usually only the tip protrudes above the subtrate. No real hairs seen, sometimes there are a few thin ones (~2 µm wide) on the base of the fruiting body, but I can't exclude they belong to the dung. Neck containing agglutinated hairs, forming triangular scales with a dark tip.
Asci 8-spored. Spores with one brown cell, 17-19 x 10-11 µm, one pedicell, 6-8 x 2 µm and often there is also 1 appendage (cauda) visible on the other side of the spore. This appendage falls easily from the fruiting body, resulting in free spores often missing this appendage.

Given the agglutinated, scale forming hairs it should be a Schizothecium. Using the key in Ellis & Ellis leads me to S. vesticola. But according to the description in 'Fungi fimicoli Italici' and 'Coprophilous fungi in New Zealand. I. Podospora species with swollen agglutinated perithecial hairs' this species has 2 long caudae, I've only seen one rather short cauda.
Another possibility could be Podospora fimbriata, but I can't find a good description of that specie, but the little information I found stated this species is found on goose dung and doesn't have caudae.
Most of the other species seem to have different spore sizes, or obvious hairs.

Martin

Hello

It is certainly a Schizothecium, but vesticola spores may be a bit small. Try It Out if you can put other more detailed photos of spores with appendages.

Hi Martin,

this is a species of the genus Schizothecium. The Squamufolien speak clearly for it. Even if the spores are not strictly uniseriate, I would say this is Schizothecium oedotrichum N. Lund, where the spores are so small. I can not currently on my literature, so I can answer you later again.

Hi Michel,
I've taken a few new pictures of the appendages, see attachment. It's hard to find free spores with appendages, and even harder to photograph them. I've seen dozens of spores, but only a few with appendages.

Hi Peter,
Looking forward to your answer.

Re:Podospora/Schizothecium on hare dung
Hello Martin

Really sorry, but the last pictures we do not yet see enough spores and their appendages. Try to take pictures with assemblies in water, then stained with a drop of such nigrosin or diluted ink. Sometimes, this enabled a better view of the appendages, but this is still a difficult thing.

New attempt in ink, couldn't find free spores with clear appendages, so only spores which are still in the asci:

Re:Podospora/Schizothecium on hare dung
Can something be said with the above pictures, or or the pictures still not clear enough?
Does anyone have a description of Schizothecium oedotrichum?
