Perithecia on Sphagnum
Chris Johnson, 11-06-2018 09:20
Good morning all, it's been a while since I have been here as I've been engaged in coastal research.

This was found on a vertical peat face with sphagnum and an alga. Soma data are on the images. Spores are 3-septate, 23.8–26.0 x 7.1–8.4 µm. All preparations are in water.

Any help with identification would be very welcome.

Best regards, Chris

Keys out to Helminthosphaeria ludens here:  http://wwx.inhs.illinois.edu/files/5714/0191/3047/Helminthosphaeriaceae_Miller_et_al_Mycologia2014.pdf

but the asci appear bitunicate so maybe a species of Capronia?

Re : Perithecia on Sphagnum
I would agree with Capronia, since paraphysis seem to be lacking
Cheers

Many thanks Andy and Pascal. I will look into Capronia first.

Re : Perithecia on Sphagnum
I would also suggest looking into Epibryon, which can be morphologically very similar to Capronia.

Best wishes,
Gernot

Ok Gernot, thank you for that, I will add it to the list.

Best wishes, Chris

Re : Perithecia on Sphagnum
Could it be the lichen Thelidium zwackhii? It strongly resembles an Epibryon / Capronia but terricolous.
