Creosphaeria sassafras ?
Ethan Crenson, 05-12-2017 16:20
In New York City on a branch of Sassafras. (Whalleya microplaca was present on the same branch).  Black globose fruiting bodies erumpent through the bark, 1-2mm in diameter, some growing confluent, somewhat flattened at the apex, with the black pigment becoming lighter in a spot near the apex (ostiole?).  Mustard yellow-orange powdery material in between the perithecia.  Brown spores, ellipsoid to ellipsoid-cylindrical, 9.5-12 by 4µm.  Asci with amyloid apical ring, long stipitate, spore bearing part 52-74 by 5-7µm.  Is this Creosphaeria sassafras?  The spore measurements I took are larger than those in Ellis and Everhart (7-9 x 3µm).  Thank you in advance!

Re : Creosphaeria sassafras ?
Hi Ethan, you are correct, I am not aware of anything else with similar characters. I have not seen material from the US but your measurements match well with mines from European collections.
Cheers,
Jacques

Re : Creosphaeria sassafras ?
Thank you for your quick reply, Jacques. Shortly after I posted this, I read the page on your web site about Creosphaeria sassafras. It looks very much like my collection, except that the growth habit for my collection seems to consist of more individual stromata whereas the ones that you illustrated grow more confluent in longer stromata.  Can that be attributed to the differing host species?  Or is there another factor?
Regards,
Ethan

Re : Creosphaeria sassafras ?
I have seen several additional collections since our first records, some of them much like what you illustrated. I think the structure of the bark and growth conditions are responsible for these differences in the habit of stromata. I remember a plentiful collection on branches of Laurus nobilis in which many types of configuration could be observed, depending on which side of the branch they grew.
Thanks for your nice finds!
Jacques
