Coniochaeta sp. on decorticated Quercus ilex
Rodríguez Borja, 08-04-2015 22:14
Rodríguez BorjaBonjour à tous,

Few days ago I found this Coniochaeta specie growing on decorticated Quercus ilex branch, at 800 m.s.m near a flooded area.

Description:
Perithecia up to 450 x 350 µm, sessile and grouped; without stroma and with black papillae but very small; mostly covered with yellow bloom. Setae 30-65 x 5-7 µm in all the acomata.
Asci with 8 spores, uniseriate, 100-110 x 8-12 µm. Redder apex with IKI at high concentrations and at low concentrations and with pretreatment with KOH, without reaction. I think they have croziers (in the collage you can see a picture with the base of asci septum).
Spores ellipsoid, Me: 16.8 x 8.6 mm; Qe: 1.9, size quite variable, with thickened wall and in some cases with irregular margin, they have a longitudinal slot. I have not seen a patent capsule.

Following a Asgari et al., 2007 and Czech et al., 1988 I do not get clearly any species. Maybe C. ligniaria is closest species but usually presents the wider spores. C. scatigena presents ascomata with papilla and somewhat wider spores.

Thank you very much,
Best regards!

Borja

Re : Coniochaeta sp. on decorticated Quercus ilex
Hello Borja.

It is often difficult to separate some species of this genus; I think the average spore (width) is very important. C.ligniaria is a variable species, and I believe that it is this species.

Regards.

Michel.

Re : Coniochaeta sp. on decorticated Quercus ilex
Hello Michel,

I know that this genus is a bit tricky for now, and that there are very few molecular data...

C. ligniaria would be the closest but the spores and yellowish ascomata make me doubt. I have hardly any experience with these species so if there are no other comments I will named as Coniochaeta aff. ligniariato make a deeper study.

Thank you very much for your comments Michel.

Best regards!
