I would have thought L. ovina (L. lanuginosa I do not know). What are the differences? You speak of the L. lanuginosa complex which is genetically so close to L. ovina that it might be difficult by morphology alone to distinguish it, but why are you sure here?

I am sure because I am the World expert on this group...ha! The tomentum is tight in L. ovina, but loose and can envelop multiple ascomata in L. lanuginosa. Ascospores in L. ovina have short, awl-like appendages vs. long, lash-like appendages in L. lanuginosa.

Thank you this is very helpful! Looking back through some collections that I labeled L. ovina, I found this image. The tomentum appears "tight", but the fruiting bodies are in some cases convergent, so that the tomentum appears to envelope multiple ascomata--or at least it could be construed that way. Which species would you say this is?

Isn't it that Breitenbach & Kränzlin have L. lanuginosa then?
Did you ever see in my folder ovina? I have there awl-like appendages in HB 7942. In a sample by F. Schumm 16.IX.2012 the appendages are invisible (dead state), but the tomentum covers several perithecia.

Ethan, I would name this L. lanuginosa, but look for lash-like appendages on the ascospores to confirm.

No, never saw it.

Yes indeed, it seems so! I would like to see L. lanuginosa in the living state. It seems the appendage is about of double length than L. ovina.
