Ascobolus on Goose dung
Malcolm Greaves, 30-06-2020 16:29
Malcolm GreavesHello
I was trying to re-find A brantophilus and came across this second Ascobolus.
A globose apothecia 1/3 mm. The spores are 27-28.9 x 15 with a granular surface which breaks up to give a striate surface on full maturity. This seems to fit key out to Ascobolus elegans in van Brummelen. It is not a species I know of so can anyone confirm?
Thanks
Mal

Good evening Malcolm.

Pretty find! I do not know this species but your determination seems right from your measurements. Have you also noticed the presence of fairly dark pigment at the top of paraphyses?

Michel.

Re : Ascobolus on Goose dung
Thanks Michel. Looking at a fresh sample mounted in water does not clearly show any brown/yellowish mucus around the filiform paraphyses other than the flesh of the apothecia itself.
