Ombrophila-like with capitate paraphyses

Hei!

Before I do further studies, just a quick Q: Is there an Ombrophila, Ascocoryne or related species with this kind of distinctly capitate paraphyses?  On spruce.

Bonsoir,

Ascocoryne inflata pourrait être une possibilité.

I think that's spot on :) I thought this was a provisional name. It does not appear in Index Fungorum, but it does appear in GBIF. Has it been formally described?

Thanks a lot, anyway!

Formally described yes but not validly. It is a species of Doreen E. Wilson, described in her unpublished dissertation.

Your next photos on this fungus you should do without phase contrast, and with ascospores, then we can fix this species.

Re : Ombrophila-like with capitate paraphyses
Of course, Zotto - the phase contrast was just in order to show the paraphyses more clearly.  Here are some spore/ascus photos from re-wetted material, mounted in water. The IKI+ photo is in Lugol. Spores measure (15-)17-20 x 5-6 microns. This seems to fit well.

Re : Ombrophila-like with capitate paraphyses
I know this but I see them very well and much clearer on your third new pic anyway.

It is similar with DIC, nice effects but loss of sharpness.

The spores are very small. Is your sample perhaps not fully mature?

The species varies from 15-20 up to 20-30 µm.

Anyway, it cannot be anything else.

Three of your new pics show dead elements, not sure why.

Re : Ombrophila-like with capitate paraphyses
Comment on phase contrast noted (a basidio habit/culture).

I just amended the spore measures a few minutes ago after having made more accurate measures on what I judged to be mature spores.  So 17-20 should be within the range.

Good. If you tell me the collection data I will include it in my distribution map.

Excellent. I will send you as soon as I have the details from the collector.  I assume you are also interested in two additional findings from Western Norway made in Nov last year?

Yes, if it is the same species.
